Jadavpur University in Kolkata has established two new hostels for first-year undergraduate students, nearly one year after a fresher's death linked to alleged ragging. The first hostel, accommodating 70 students, is already operational, while a second hostel with 50 beds will open soon. This initiative follows the tragic incident last August, where a student fell from a balcony after enduring hours of ragging, resulting in 13 arrests. To mitigate future incidents, the university has decided to house first-year students separately from their seniors, with second and third-year students now in an off-campus men's hostel. Additionally, starting from the 2024-25 academic year, second-year students will also have designated accommodation to further combat ragging. These measures aim to enhance student safety and align with University Grants Commission regulations.
