SGPC changes Nishan Sahib
The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has replaced the saffron (kesri) color of the Nishan Sahib (Sikh flag) at the Akal Takht and other gurdwaras with the traditional basanti (yellow) color, following directives from five Sikh high priests. This decision has been met with mixed reactions, with the Damdami Taksal, a key ally of the Akali Dal, subtly opposing the change, although it has been largely accepted by the broader Sikh community. The change aligns with the Sikh Rehat Maryada, which specifies that the Nishan Sahib should be either basanti or surmai (greyish blue). The decision was officially taken after complaints about non-compliance with Sikh traditions, prompting a review by the Akal Takht. A circular has also been issued to all gurdwaras under SGPC management to adhere to these color guidelines henceforth. This marks a significant shift in SGPC policy after years of using the saffron color, which had sparked controversy among Sikh organizations.
