UK Government Warns Broadband Firms on Poles

UK Technology Minister Sir Chris Bryant has called on broadband providers to limit the installation of unnecessary telegraph poles in response to community concerns about infrastructure disruption. While the government's support for fast broadband is 'unwavering', Bryant emphasized the need for telecom companies to be 'mindful' of local sentiments, urging them to consider sharing existing infrastructure or placing cables underground instead. He warned that if the industry fails to heed these calls, he is prepared to amend the law. A roundtable meeting is scheduled for September to further discuss these issues with telecom operators. The government has noted a rise in complaints about the visual impact of new poles and a lack of prior consultation in recent years. Meanwhile, the previous administration had facilitated pole installations to expedite broadband rollout but faced criticism over community engagement.
