Iran executes inmates

In the first seven months of 2024, at least 300 executions were reported in Iran, reflecting a 30% decrease from the same period in 2023. Among the executed individuals were 15 women, 42 Baluchis, 20 Kurds, and 20 Afghan nationals, with 172 executed for drug-related offenses and 110 for murder. Notably, only 9% of the executions were officially announced by the Iranian government, raising concerns about transparency and human rights. Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam, head of the Iranian Human Rights Organization, warned of a potential increase in executions of civil activists and drug offenders, stressing the need for international pressure to curb this trend. Human rights advocates continue to call attention to the alarming conditions in Iranian prisons and the ongoing practice of capital punishment, despite recent declines in execution rates. The situation remains dire, with many executions being carried out in secrecy, further complicating efforts to monitor and address human rights abuses in Iran.
