Appian Way Gains UNESCO World Heritage Status
The Appian Way, known as the Regina Viarum or Queen of Roads, has been officially recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, marking Italy's 60th entry on the prestigious list. Constructed in 312 BC under Appius Claudius Caecus, the road initially served military purposes, connecting Rome to Brindisi, and later became a vital commercial and cultural artery. The UNESCO designation highlights the road's exceptional engineering and its significant role in historical trade, cultural exchanges, and infrastructure development. The first 17 kilometers of the cobblestone path remain preserved within the Appia Antica archaeological park in Rome, attracting history enthusiasts. Italian Culture Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano praised the recognition, emphasizing its universal value and enduring legacy. The announcement was made during the World Heritage Committee's session in New Delhi.
