Australia Prioritizes Indigenous Knowledge in Science Framework

Australia has unveiled new National Science and Research Priorities for the first time in nearly a decade, emphasizing the integration of Indigenous knowledge systems alongside goals like transitioning to net zero and supporting community health. The initiative, led by Chief Scientist Dr. Cathy Foley and Industry Minister Ed Husic, aims to align efforts across government, universities, and the private sector while ensuring that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are central to research affecting their knowledge and cultural heritage. The priorities, developed through extensive consultations, also include safeguarding Indigenous cultural and intellectual property. There is a strong focus on utilizing Indigenous knowledge to address climate change and guide technological advancements, reflecting a long history of 65,000 years of knowledge. This approach is welcomed by the STEM community as a necessary step towards fostering a more inclusive and innovative scientific landscape in Australia.
