NHS Diet Program Reverses Diabetes in Trial
A landmark NHS calorie restriction program for Type 2 diabetes has shown that nearly a third of participants achieved remission after following a strict 12-week low-calorie diet of soups and shakes, followed by a gradual reintroduction of regular food with continuous support. The year-long program resulted in significant weight loss, with many participants losing over 35 lbs. Despite its promising results, the extreme nature of the diet means it is not suitable for everyone, and adherence rates are low with only about half completing the program. Experts highlight the potential life-changing benefits and cost savings for public health, though concerns remain about the sustainability and psychological impact of such restrictive diets. The program is expanding across England, aiming to reach up to 50,000 people by 2029.
