Illinois Launches State Flag Design Contest

The Illinois Flag Commission will begin accepting public submissions for a new state flag design from Sept. 3 through Oct. 18, 2023. Established by Senate Bill 1818, the commission, chaired by Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias, aims to reflect Illinois' diverse identity and inspire state pride. Submissions can be made online or by mail and must include the designer's contact information and a brief description of the design's significance. Ten finalists will be selected for an online public survey starting Jan. 1, 2025, where residents can vote for their favorite or retain the current flag. The initiative follows other states like Minnesota in using public participation to redesign state symbols. The Illinois General Assembly will make the final decision based on the commission's recommendations.
