Edmonton man sentenced
Khaled Hussein, a 29-year-old Canadian citizen from Edmonton, has been sentenced to five years in prison by a British court for his membership in the proscribed terrorist organization Al-Muhajiroun, also known as the Islamic Thinkers Society. He was convicted alongside prominent British radical Islamist preacher Anjem Choudary, who received a life sentence for directing the group. Hussein was identified as a person of interest by the RCMP during a counterterrorism investigation that began in 2019, and he was arrested at Heathrow Airport in July 2023 after traveling from Edmonton. The court highlighted Hussein's role in assisting Choudary through various tasks, including setting up websites and editing extremist publications, despite his limited ability to engage in activities from Canada. Justice Mark Wall noted that Hussein was influenced by Choudary and was eager to deepen his involvement in extremist activities. Following his prison term, Hussein will serve an additional year on probation.
