The NMDC, which operates significant iron ore mines in Bailadila hills, has labeled the penalty as 'completely inappropriate' and 'unfounded,' asserting full compliance with all relevant mining regulations and environmental clearances. The administration found NMDC's responses to prior show cause notices unsatisfactory, leading to the hefty fine. NMDC maintains that it has all necessary approvals, including valid mining leases and advance royalty payments, and plans to dispute the claims. The company emphasizes its crucial role in India's iron ore production, contributing significantly to both domestic steel production and exports.
