Tom Waits new version
Tom Waits is celebrating the 25th anniversary of his acclaimed album 'Mule Variations' with the release of a previously unheard version of the song 'Get Behind the Mule,' titled 'Get Behind the Mule (Spiritual).' This rendition features Waits accompanied solely by a Wurlitzer electric piano, offering a stripped-down interpretation that emphasizes the song's haunting lyrics. Released in 1999, 'Mule Variations' was the inaugural album of the Anti-Records label, founded by Epitaph specifically for this project, and it won a Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Album. Epitaph's founder Brett Gurewitz expressed gratitude for the album's role in launching the label and its lasting partnership with Waits. The album has sold over 500,000 copies and remains influential across various music genres, showcasing Waits' unique artistry. Though he has not released new material in years, this anniversary marks a significant moment in his storied career.
