Breakdancing Debuts at 2024 Paris Olympics

Breakdancing, officially known as 'breaking,' made its debut at the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics, marking a significant milestone for the sport and hip-hop culture. Local breakers in the U.S. expressed excitement about the sport's inclusion, seeing it as a validation of breaking as both an art form and a competitive sport. The competition features B-Boys and B-Girls in a head-to-head, tournament-style format, judged on musicality, vocabulary, originality, technique, and execution. Notably, Japan won the women's gold medal, while the men's competition is ongoing. The future of breaking in the Olympics remains uncertain as it is not currently included in the 2028 games. The inclusion of breaking is part of the IOC’s effort to attract younger audiences, alongside other new sports like skateboarding, surfing, and sport climbing.
