Wildfires Threaten Suburbs of Athens, Greece
Greece is facing its most severe wildfire season in two decades, with a major fire igniting near Athens, forcing thousands to evacuate. The blaze, which began northeast of the capital, has already destroyed homes and trees, and is fueled by high temperatures and strong winds, leading to conditions that are still deemed dangerous. Firefighting efforts include over 700 firefighters and international assistance from EU countries such as France and Italy. Evacuations were ordered in multiple areas, and the risk of further flare-ups remains high as temperatures are expected to rise to 42°C (108°F). Satellite data indicates that approximately 10,000 hectares have been burned, with a tragic fatality reported in Vrilissia. Despite the reduction of risk levels in some areas, the situation is being closely monitored as aerial and ground firefighting operations continue.
