Ukraine Claims Control of Kursk Region

Ukraine's military has claimed control of nearly 1,300 square kilometers (about 500 square miles) of Russia's Kursk region, marking a significant territorial gain since the start of their offensive on August 6. General Oleksandr Syrskyi reported the capture of 594 Russian servicemen and noted that Russian forces are attempting to regroup in response, which has weakened their overall defense. This development comes amidst escalating violence, with Russia launching over 100 missiles and drones at Ukraine, resulting in casualties among civilians and damage to energy infrastructure. President Zelenskyy has emphasized the need for Western support to counteract these Russian attacks and has announced plans to propose a comprehensive strategy for peace talks. The conflict has led to the evacuation of approximately 130,000 residents in affected areas. The Russian Defense Ministry, however, claims significant Ukrainian losses, including thousands of troops and numerous destroyed vehicles, though these figures remain unverified.
