After nearly five years of border closures due to COVID-19, North Korea is set to reopen to international tourists starting in December 2024. Initial tourism will be limited to the northeastern city of Samjiyon, with potential expansions to other parts of the country, including Pyongyang. China-based tour operators Koryo Tours and KTG Tours have confirmed the reopening, although they caution that early tours may face logistical challenges. The reopening follows significant redevelopment in Samjiyon, including new hotels, railways, and a ski resort. The move comes amid international tensions and follows North Korea's gradual easing of restrictions, including allowing Russian tourists earlier this year. The reopening aims to revive tourism, a vital income source for the financially isolated nation.
