New bill limits Social Security
A new proposal introduced in Congress, known as the 'Protecting Americans from Social Security Claw Back Act,' aims to address the issue of Social Security overpayments, which have affected millions of beneficiaries due to errors by the Social Security Administration (SSA). The bill, sponsored by Rep. Mike Carey (R-OH) and co-sponsored by Rep. Emilia Sykes (D-OH), seeks to limit the time frame in which the SSA can demand repayment to three years. Carey emphasized the need for the agency to act promptly, stating that many affected individuals have played by the rules and deserve relief from unexpected financial burdens. Investigations revealed that the number of people impacted by overpayment clawbacks is potentially double the previously reported figure of one million per year. The proposal has garnered significant attention, and Carey is hopeful for bipartisan support to advance the legislation and improve the efficiency of the SSA.
