Nationwide Strike Over Kolkata Doctor’s Murder

Doctors across India have gone on strike, suspending non-urgent services to demand justice and enhanced security measures following the rape and murder of a 31-year-old resident doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College. The victim was found with severe injuries after her shift, and a hospital volunteer, Sanjay Roy, was arrested in connection with the crime. The Federation of Resident Doctors' Association (FORDA) initiated the strike, which has received widespread support, affecting services in major hospitals across states including Delhi, Maharashtra, and Kerala. Protesters are calling for a thorough investigation, a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe, and the implementation of stringent security protocols for healthcare workers. The protests have led to significant disruptions in outpatient services and surgeries, with some medical associations demanding a central law to prevent violence against healthcare workers. Despite assurances from the West Bengal Chief Minister, doctors continue their strike, demanding a judicial inquiry and capital punishment for the culprits.
