UK Police End Election Betting Investigation
The Metropolitan Police have concluded their investigation into allegations that politicians and police officers used insider information to place bets on the date of the general election, finding insufficient evidence to prove misconduct in public office. Despite this, the Gambling Commission continues to investigate possible violations of the Gambling Act. Seven police officers, including members of the Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards, remain under investigation. Prominent political figures, such as Rishi Sunak's former parliamentary aide Craig Williams and other Conservative Party members, are also implicated. The Gambling Commission is focused on whether confidential information was used to gain an unfair betting advantage. Public confidence was significantly impacted during the election campaign due to these allegations.
