Chandrayaan-3 Confirms Ancient Lunar Magma Ocean
India's Chandrayaan-3 mission has provided crucial evidence supporting the theory that the Moon was once covered by a 'magma ocean' around 4.5 billion years ago. The mission's rover, Pragyan, collected soil samples near the lunar south pole, revealing a uniform composition primarily consisting of ferroan anorthosite, a rock type linked to the Moon's early geological history. These findings align with previous lunar samples obtained during the Apollo and Luna missions, suggesting a shared geological history across different lunar regions. The research indicates that as the Moon cooled, lighter minerals like ferroan anorthosite floated to the surface, forming its crust. This study enhances our understanding of the Moon's early evolution, especially in the context of the Lunar Magma Ocean theory. The successful landing and exploration by the Vikram lander represents a significant achievement for India's space program, marking the first time a mission has landed in this unexplored area.
