Meta has announced a groundbreaking partnership with Sage Geosystems to develop up to 150 megawatts of advanced geothermal energy for its data centers, marking a significant expansion into geothermal resources east of the Rocky Mountains. This initiative aims to utilize enhanced geothermal systems, which involve creating artificial reservoirs in rock formations, thus enabling clean energy production in areas previously deemed unsuitable. The project, supported by the U.S. Department of Energy, underlines Meta's commitment to carbon-free power and sustainable energy solutions, with plans for the first phase to be operational by 2027. The partnership also highlights the potential of geothermal energy as a reliable baseload power source and the scalability of Sage's Geopressured Geothermal System technology. Meta has already secured contracts for over 12,000 MW of renewable energy projects, positioning itself as a leading corporate buyer of clean energy globally.
