Pune Proposes Heavy Vehicle Ban During Peak Hours

Pune traffic authorities are proposing a ban on heavy vehicles on the Katraj-Dehu Road bypass during peak hours (8 AM - 10 AM and 5 PM - 9 PM) to alleviate severe congestion and improve safety. The decision comes in response to the bypass experiencing nearly double its intended traffic capacity, with frequent jams and accidents, including 15 fatalities in 2023 alone. Additional Commissioner of Police Manoj Patil emphasized the need for the ban due to narrow lanes at key locations such as Navale Bridge, Vadgaon Bridge, and Mutha Bridge, which significantly contribute to delays. Heavy vehicles will be redirected to designated parking areas on surrounding highways during these hours. The proposal is pending approval from the District Collector and highlights the urgent need for traffic management amid rapid urbanization linked to the Hinjewadi IT Park. Authorities are also implementing stricter enforcement against traffic violations and obstructions caused by local businesses.
