Notting Hill Carnival Sees Violence Despite Attendance
The Notting Hill Carnival, Europe's largest street festival, was marred by violence as eight people were stabbed over the two-day event, with three victims in life-threatening condition. The Metropolitan Police made 334 arrests for various offenses, including possession of offensive weapons and sexual offenses. Officers seized multiple firearms and other weapons, and 50 police officers were injured during the festivities. Despite the violence, the event attracted around one million attendees who celebrated Caribbean culture through colorful costumes, dancing, and music. Measures such as knife-detecting arches and enhanced search powers were implemented to curb violence. The police expressed frustration over recurring violence, noting that efforts to ensure safety continue to be a significant challenge each year.
