Westinghouse Electric has received approval from the UK's Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) to enter the Generic Design Assessment (GDA) process for its AP300 Small Modular Reactor (SMR). This approval initiates a rigorous review of safety, security, and environmental standards before site-specific proposals can be developed. The AP300, which boasts a power output of 300 MW, is based on the proven Gen III+ AP1000 technology, already licensed in the UK, US, and China. Westinghouse's familiarity with UK regulations and its established track record in nuclear licensing positions the company favorably in the SMR market. The AP300 is part of the Great British Nuclear initiative, with plans to construct four units in Northeast England. The reactor is expected to be operational by the early 2030s, marking a significant step in the UK's nuclear energy strategy.
