2024 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally Generates $1.4 Million in Taxes

The primary source of revenue was state sales tax, which contributed $790,805, down from $818,784 in 2023. Participation saw a slight decrease with 896 temporary vendors, 17 fewer than last year. The Northern Black Hills reported an 8% drop in tax collections, totaling $992,067 from 699 vendors, while the Southern Black Hills experienced a 12% increase, collecting $407,434 from 197 vendors. The rally was also marked by serious incidents, including 12 motorcycle crash fatalities and a significant number of DUI arrests. The Sturgis mayor is now considering a 10% budget cut across city departments due to the revenue shortfall.
