ECI Announces Jammu and Kashmir Election Dates
The Election Commission of India has announced the schedule for the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections, marking the first such elections in the region since 2018 and the first since the abrogation of Article 370. Voting will be conducted in three phases on September 18, September 25, and October 1, with the counting of votes scheduled for October 4. The region has 90 Assembly seats and a voter base of over 8.7 million electors. The elections are being held following a Supreme Court mandate to conduct them by September 30, 2024. This marks a significant political event as Jammu and Kashmir has been without an elected government since the collapse of the PDP-BJP coalition in 2018.
