Hocker Wins 1500m Gold with Olympic Record
American Cole Hocker pulled off a stunning upset in the men's 1500m at the 2024 Paris Olympics, winning gold with an Olympic record time of 3:27.65. Hocker outpaced favorites Jakob Ingebrigtsen of Norway and Josh Kerr of Great Britain in the final 100 meters, with Kerr taking silver. This victory marks the first U.S. gold in the 1500m since 2016 and the first time since 1912 that two Americans have medaled in the event. Ingebrigtsen, the defending Olympic champion, finished fourth after leading for most of the race and later expressed humility in defeat, congratulating his competitors on social media. Despite the setback, Ingebrigtsen quickly rebounded to qualify for the 5000m final.
