A magnitude-5.2 earthquake struck off the southern Greek island of Crete on Wednesday evening, occurring at a depth of 11.6 kilometers. The Athens Geodynamic Institute reported the tremor at 7:29 PM local time, with no immediate reports of injuries or damage to buildings. The earthquake was felt across Crete, a popular tourist destination, but initial assessments indicate no significant impact. Greece, being in a seismically active zone, frequently experiences earthquakes, though serious incidents are uncommon. A notable exception was a 1999 earthquake near Athens, which resulted in 143 fatalities. The tremor was also felt in parts of Turkey, according to reports.
