Three Men Charged in New Zealand Tourist Murder

Three men accused of murdering New Zealand tourist Patricia McKay, 68, during a robbery at Newport Beach's Fashion Island mall appeared in court Wednesday after initially refusing to attend earlier hearings. Leroy McCrary, 26, Malachi Darnell, 18, and Jaden Cunningham, 18, are charged with murder, attempted second-degree robbery, and other crimes, with the possibility of facing the death penalty. Prosecutors allege that during the robbery, McCrary ran over McKay with a car, dragging her 65 feet, while Darnell and Cunningham attempted to rob her husband. Defense attorneys opposed media coverage, claiming it could prejudice potential jurors, but Judge Andre Manssourian denied their request, allowing media to photograph the defendants. The arraignment has been postponed to August 1 to give defense lawyers more time to prepare.
