FDA Reclassifies Walnut Recall as Class I Risk

The FDA has reclassified the recall of shelled walnuts from Stutz Packing Company to a Class I risk, indicating a high probability of severe health consequences or death due to potential listeria contamination. These walnuts, distributed to Texas and Arizona food banks, were initially recalled in July after routine testing detected Listeria monocytogenes. Despite no reported illnesses, the recall was elevated due to the serious health risks posed by listeria, which can be particularly harmful to vulnerable populations such as the elderly and pregnant women. Stutz has ceased production and is cooperating with the FDA's ongoing investigation. This recall follows a similar listeria-related recall from Boar's Head, which resulted in three deaths and multiple hospitalizations. Consumers are advised to discard or return the affected products, identified by specific lot codes and UPC numbers.
