UN on executions in Iran
The UN Human Rights Office has expressed deep concern over reports that Iranian authorities executed 29 individuals in just two days, contributing to a total of at least 345 executions in 2024, including 15 women. Spokesperson Liz Throssell highlighted that many of these executions were for drug-related offenses, which she stated is inconsistent with international human rights norms. She noted the alarming pace of executions and pointed out that minorities such as Kurds, Arabs, and Baluch are disproportionately impacted. The UN has longstanding concerns regarding the lack of due process, as many executions occur without informing the prisoners' families or legal counsel. Throssell called for Iran to impose a moratorium on executions, advocating for a shift toward universal abolition. The UN has not independently verified the execution numbers reported.
