A massive wildfire near Athens, Greece, has claimed the life of a woman and caused extensive damage, leading to the evacuation of thousands of residents, including from hospitals and monasteries. The fire began near Varnavas and quickly spread due to strong winds, affecting areas up to 35 km from the capital. Despite efforts from over 700 firefighters and international assistance, the blaze destroyed homes, businesses, and forests. Although the fire's intensity has decreased due to milder winds, scattered hotspots remain. The Greek government has announced relief measures for those affected, as the country remains on high alert for further fires due to ongoing heatwaves and dry conditions.
