The New York Mets have acquired right-handed reliever Phil Maton from the Tampa Bay Rays to bolster their struggling bullpen, which has posted a major-league worst 9.41 ERA in July. In exchange, the Rays will receive either a player to be named later or cash considerations. Maton, who has a 4.58 ERA this season, has shown improvement recently with a 0.75 ERA over his last 11 games. The Mets designated pitcher Joey Lucchesi for assignment to make room for Maton on the roster. Maton's contract includes a $6.25 million salary for this year and a $7.75 million team option for next year. The Rays will replace Maton with right-hander Manuel Rodríguez from Triple-A Durham.
