Hifumi Abe Wins Gold; Uta Abe Defeated Early
Hifumi Abe of Japan secured the gold medal in the men's under-66kg judo at the Paris Olympics, with Willian Lima of Brazil taking silver, and Gusman Kyrgyzbayev of Kazakhstan and Denis Vieru of Moldova earning bronze medals. In a surprising turn, Uta Abe, the reigning Olympic champion in the women's 52kg judo, was defeated by Uzbekistan's Diyora Keldiyorova in the round of 16, ending her unbeaten streak since 2019. The U.S. women's gymnastics team, led by Simone Biles, topped the qualifiers for the team final, earning high scores in three out of four apparatuses. Additionally, Great Britain's women's four rowing team advanced to the final with the fastest heat time, and South Sudan's men's basketball team made their historic Olympic debut against Puerto Rico.
