Venezuelan Opposition Disputes Maduro's Election Victory
Venezuelan opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia has accused President Nicolas Maduro of refusing a political transition after the disputed July 28 election, urging Maduro to respect the will of the people. Meanwhile, opposition leader Maria Corina Machado rejected proposals from Brazil and other countries for a new election, calling it disrespectful to Venezuelans who voted last month. Despite widespread voter suppression and the arrest of around 2,000 people, the opposition claims Gonzalez won with 70% of the vote, while the Maduro-controlled electoral body declared Maduro the winner without releasing detailed vote tallies. U.S. President Joe Biden and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva have both expressed support for new elections as a resolution to the crisis.
