Iran Election Runoff Set, Mongolia Votes
The United States has congratulated Mongolia on the successful parliamentary elections held on June 28, 2024, which saw the election of new members to the State Great Khural. Meanwhile, Iran's presidential election is heading to a runoff on July 5, 2024, between reformist Masoud Pezeshkian and hard-line former nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili, after no candidate secured a majority of votes. The election, triggered by the death of President Ebrahim Raisi, witnessed a record-low turnout of around 40%, reflecting widespread public disenchantment. Pezeshkian, the leading candidate, received 10.4 million votes against Jalili's 9.4 million. The unprecedented low voter participation is seen as a significant blow to the regime, which has faced increasing opposition and calls for boycotts from notable figures.
