Researchers from Toho University School of Medicine in Japan have developed an AI system capable of predicting male infertility risk with approximately 74% accuracy through hormone level analysis in blood samples. The model demonstrates 100% accuracy in identifying non-obstructive azoospermia, a severe form of infertility characterized by the absence of sperm in semen. This innovative approach aims to enhance accessibility to male infertility screening, as it can be implemented in primary care settings without the need for specialized laboratories. Associate Professor Hideyuki Kobayashi, who led the research, emphasizes that while this AI model serves as a preliminary screening tool, it should not replace traditional semen testing. The study, published in Scientific Reports, analyzed data from nearly 4,000 men and highlights the challenges of current semen analysis, which is often limited to specialized fertility centers. This advancement could significantly streamline the diagnostic process for male infertility, affecting around 7% of men globally and representing half of infertility cases in heterosexual couples.
