Heavy rainfall in India

July 2024 witnessed eight instances of exceptionally heavy rainfall across India, with the highest recorded at 56 cm in Maharashtra's Tamhini. While the overall rainfall was above normal, over a fourth of Indian states, particularly Chandigarh and Manipur, faced significant rain deficits exceeding 50%. In Punjab and Haryana, recent heavy rains provided relief from humidity, causing temperatures to drop by 2-4 degrees Celsius and resulted in waterlogging in several areas. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported notable rainfall amounts, including 157.2 mm in Pathankot and 140.8 mm in Ambala. Despite some regions receiving excess rain, agricultural sowing remained low due to uneven reservoir levels and ongoing rain deficits in major rice-growing states. The government's hopes for agricultural recovery are hindered by a growth slowdown, with only a 1.4% increase recorded in FY24 compared to previous years.
