More than 150 sub-postmasters affected by the Post Office scandal have already applied for a new compensation scheme that offers payouts starting at £600,000, with the government setting aside up to £1 billion for this initiative. The Horizon Convictions Redress Scheme allows the approximately 900 victims to either accept the fixed amount or pursue a more extensive assessment if they believe their losses exceed that figure. The scheme follows the quashing of wrongful convictions tied to the faulty Horizon IT system, which has been described as one of the worst miscarriages of justice in British history. Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds emphasized the need for prompt financial support for these victims, who have waited too long for justice. Critics, however, have expressed concern over the slow rollout of confirmation letters and the overall pace of progress in the compensation process. Solicitors representing the victims have already seen significant interest in the scheme, indicating that many may seek higher compensation due to their extensive losses.
