NATO appoints new envoy

NATO has appointed Javier Colomina as its new Special Representative for the Southern Neighbourhood, which encompasses the Middle East, North Africa, and the Sahel. Colomina, who previously served as NATO’s envoy for the Caucasus and Central Asia, will play a key role in coordinating NATO's efforts and enhancing partnerships in these regions. However, the appointment has sparked controversy in Italy, where Defence Minister Guido Crosetto criticized the choice, claiming it betrayed the Italian government’s preference for an Italian candidate. This appointment is part of a broader action plan agreed upon at a recent NATO summit aimed at increasing engagement in these critical areas. Colomina's role is expected to enhance NATO's visibility and effectiveness in addressing regional security challenges.
