Eton College Fees to Rise by 20%

Eton College has announced it will increase its fees by 20%, raising the annual cost from £52,749 to approximately £63,000, following the UK government's decision to remove the VAT exemption on independent schools starting January. This policy change aims to raise funds for hiring 6,500 new teachers in state schools. Eton's Provost and Fellows expressed regret and disappointment over the government's decision, particularly due to its mid-academic year implementation. The school committed to offering financial assistance to families unable to afford the higher fees, ensuring that those receiving 100% bursaries remain unaffected. Critics argue that the additional cost could lead to higher expenses if displaced students move to state schools. The Girls' Day School Trust also announced a 12% fee increase for its schools in response to the VAT changes.
