San Antonio's Culebra Road to Get $8M Safety Grant
San Antonio's Culebra Road, known as the city's most dangerous road with over 50 fatal crashes in the last decade, will undergo significant safety improvements funded by an $8 million federal grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation's RAISE Program. The grant will cover planning, design, and environmental work for a five-mile stretch from Loop 410 to General McMullen Drive. Planned upgrades include protected sidewalks, bike lanes, trees, and enhanced transit facilities, aiming to reduce accidents and improve safety for all users. The project is part of a larger $18 million bond approved by voters in 2022. Local officials, including Congressman Joaquin Castro and Mayor Ron Nirenberg, have emphasized the importance of these improvements in creating a safer transportation environment. The city's Public Works Department will oversee the project in coordination with federal authorities.
