ICC monitoring in Bangladesh
The upcoming 2024 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in Bangladesh, scheduled for October 3-20, faces uncertainty following the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina amidst violent protests that have resulted in over 100 deaths. The International Cricket Council (ICC) is closely monitoring the situation in coordination with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and security agencies, emphasizing the safety of all participants. With massive demonstrations against a controversial job quota system, an interim government has been announced by Army Chief General Waqar-uz-Zaman. The ICC has not ruled out the possibility of relocating the event, potentially to Sri Lanka, recalling similar unrest experienced in 2022. Meanwhile, India's Ministry of External Affairs has advised against travel to Bangladesh, complicating the conditions under which teams might participate. The fate of the tournament remains contingent on the evolving political climate in Bangladesh as the event approaches.
