Bangladesh Leader Condemns Attacks on Minorities
Bangladesh's interim leader, Muhammad Yunus, condemned recent attacks on minority communities as 'heinous' and urged youth to protect Hindus, Christians, and Buddhists amidst ongoing unrest. Since the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on August 5, there have been at least 205 reported incidents of violence against minorities across 52 districts, prompting many Bangladeshi Hindus to flee to India for safety. Yunus, addressing students at Begum Rokeya University, emphasized the importance of national unity and cautioned against sabotage of their efforts. He called on the youth to declare that no one should harm their fellow citizens, framing the situation as a test of their leadership and commitment to communal harmony. The increasing unrest and violence have led to the formation of citizen security committees to restore order, as the country grapples with a surge in attacks and vandalism targeting minority communities.
