Meteor Showers and Celestial Events in August
This week, stargazers can enjoy a doubleheader of meteor showers with the Delta Aquariids and Alpha Capricornids peaking early Tuesday and Wednesday. The Delta Aquariids are expected to showcase about 15-20 meteors per hour, while the Alpha Capricornids will feature around five meteors per hour, often producing bright fireballs. The Perseid meteor shower, known for its prolific fireballs, has also begun and will peak on August 11-12 with up to 100 meteors per hour. Both the Delta Aquariids and Alpha Capricornids originate from comet debris, specifically 96P/Machholz and 169P/NEAT, respectively. Viewing conditions may be affected by local weather, including marine layers and thunderstorms, but inland locations away from city lights are recommended for the best experience.
