Goa Shipyard Launches India's First Pollution Control Vessel
Goa Shipyard Ltd (GSL) has launched India's first indigenous pollution control vessel, named 'Samudra Pratap', for the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) at a cost of Rs 2,500 crore. The Union Minister of State for Defence, Sanjay Seth, emphasized that the vessel is 72% self-reliant and is designed to combat coastal pollution, enhancing the capabilities of the ICG in maritime security. The ship, measuring 114.5 meters in length, will be staffed by 14 officers and 115 sailors, and features advanced technology for oil spill response operations. The project is part of India's Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, with more than 60% indigenous content contributing to local skill development and employment. The launch ceremony was attended by high-ranking officials from the ICG and the Ministry of Defence, marking a significant milestone in India's defense sector. Seth noted that this vessel will play a crucial role in preserving marine life and protecting the country's marine environment.
