Australian Senate Approves CFMEU Administration Bill
The Australian federal government has reached an agreement with the opposition to pass legislation that will place the Construction, Forestry, Maritime, and Energy Union (CFMEU) into administration for a minimum of three years, amid ongoing scandals involving organized crime infiltration. The Coalition, led by shadow minister Michaelia Cash, has secured amendments including lifetime bans for corrupt officials and a requirement for the administrator to report to Parliament every six months. Labor's initial proposal faced delays, but concessions were made after the Coalition pushed for stricter controls, including prohibitions on political donations during the administration period. The bill aims to enhance transparency and accountability within the union, with the administrator ensuring no political campaign expenditures occur. The legislation has garnered support from the building industry, which anticipates it will lead to more efficient project outcomes. The bill will soon proceed to the Senate for a vote before being sent to the House of Representatives for final approval.
