Eddie Gonzalez, a former Long Beach school safety officer, pleaded no contest to voluntary manslaughter for the 2021 fatal shooting of 18-year-old Manuela 'Mona' Rodriguez. Rodriguez was unarmed and in a fleeing vehicle when Gonzalez fired, violating district policy. The shooting resulted in Gonzalez's termination and a $13 million settlement to Rodriguez’s family. He was initially charged with murder, but a mistrial earlier this year led to the plea deal. Gonzalez will be sentenced on October 8 and faces three to six years in prison. The incident, captured on video, sparked community outrage and highlighted issues of excessive force by school safety personnel.
