The Fen Raft Spider, one of Europe's largest spiders, is making a significant comeback in the UK after being on the brink of extinction in 2010. Conservation efforts by organizations like the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) have led to a resurgence, with up to 3,750 female spiders now thriving in marshy landscapes across 12 sites in Norfolk and Suffolk. These spiders, which can grow to the size of a human hand, are known for their ability to walk on water and their diet includes fish and aquatic insects. Despite their intimidating size, they pose no significant threat to humans. Additionally, other large spiders like the Cardinal Spider, the UK's largest, are also being reported more frequently in homes and gardens, particularly during the mating season. Conservationists are proud of their role in preserving these species, emphasizing their importance in maintaining ecological diversity.
