Hurricane Hone Causes Widespread Damage in Hawaii
Hurricane Hone has brought significant impacts to Hawaii, particularly the Big Island, where it generated sustained winds of 85 mph and rainfall exceeding a foot in some areas. As of Sunday morning, nearly 18,000 utility customers were without power, and dangerous surf conditions were reported along the southern shores. The National Weather Service warned of flash flooding and mudslides, prompting Governor Josh Green to declare a state of emergency. While Hone is expected to weaken as it moves west, it will continue to pose threats through Monday. Additionally, Hurricane Gilma, currently a Category 3 storm, is tracking towards Hawaii and could affect the islands later this week. The National Hurricane Center cautioned that both storms could lead to life-threatening conditions, including heavy rainfall and strong surf.
