Amit Shah Awards Citizenship to Refugees in Gujarat

Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to grant Indian citizenship to 188 Hindu refugees from neighboring countries in a ceremony in Ahmedabad on August 18, under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). This event highlights the ongoing efforts to provide citizenship to those fleeing religious persecution, particularly from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan. Concurrently, five Bangladeshi refugees in Karnataka were also granted Indian citizenship under the CAA, marking a significant milestone in the state. In addition to the citizenship distribution, Shah will inaugurate various development projects, including an Oxygen Park and a swimming pool, further emphasizing the government's commitment to community development. The CAA, enacted in December 2019, aims to offer sanctuary to non-Muslim migrants who entered India before December 31, 2014. Despite the controversial nature of the CAA, which has faced criticism for its religious criteria, the government continues to implement it and expand its reach.
